Seven homes in Santa Rosa Crossings were evacuated late this morning after a gas leak.

Southwest Gas employees in hazardous materials suits clamped off a natural gas line broken when Cox Communications workers installed fiber optic lines.

Residents were expected to be allowed to return to their homes and the roads reopened by noon today.

Maricopa Fire Department responded to a report of a gas line break at about 10:30 a.m. in front of a home on West Cypress Lane near the intersection of North Desert Willow Drive, said Monica Williams, fire department spokesperson.

“It looks like there was a gas line that was struck,” she said.
