The NBA season may be winding down, but a number of local youth are just tipping off their season. The Jr. Suns Program starts play Saturday, June 23. The program offers boys and girls the opportunity to hone their court skills and have fun in the process.

Marty McDonald, director of Parks, Recreation and Libraries for the city of Maricopa, was very appreciative to the Ak-Chin community for their help. “I really want to thank the Ak-Chin Indian Community for allowing us to use their wonderful recreation center for the Jr. Suns Program this summer,” McDonald said. “Ak-Chin Parks and Recreation Director Martin Antone and Program Coordinator Lisa Garcia deserve a lot of kudos for their generosity. Personally, I’m excited to see the City of Maricopa and the Ak-Chin Indian Community partner on an exciting program that will benefit the children of both communities. We’re hopeful that this is the start of a great partnership, and we’re looking forward to expanding and offering more joint programs.”

This is the third season for the Jr. Suns Program for kids ages 4-12. Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, presented by Gatorade and Nike, serves existing recreational youth basketball leagues through support programs for players, coaches, parents and officials.

Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA programs emphasize fundamental skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and positive adult participation in a fun and rewarding youth basketball experience where young players can create a bond with the game while learning what it takes to be successful away from the court.

According to McDonald, the program is accepting kids on a waiting/interest list. “We’re planning to offer another session of basketball during the winter months,” McDonald said. “For those who missed the summer session, if they provide us with their contact information, we’ll update them when registration opens.”

For the summer session, games are scheduled every Saturday from June 23 to Aug. 4. Most teams will practice two nights a week.
