Internationally known composer and Maricopa resident Judith Lang Zaimont will have the New York City premiere of her String Quartet "The Figure" on Sunday's  Museum of Modern Art's  Summergarden  concert  at 8 p.m.

"The Figure" was commissioned through the Andrew G. Mellon Foundation and was premiered by the Harlem Quartet, which has performed the work on tour the past two seasons. It also leads off the composer’s CD devoted to her more recent music for strings and piano "Eternal Evolution" (Navona).

The disc features performances by the Harlem Quartet and Awadagin Pratt in a program of  Zaimont’s more recent music for strings and piano; it is already receiving positive reviews and has been heard on radio on three continents.

Zaimont is internationally recognized for her music’s distinctive style, characterized by expressive strength and dynamism. Recipient of grants and awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and gold medals in composition in international competitions, she is a 2003 Aaron Copland Award winner and  enjoys a distinguished career as composer of more than 100 works with performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Berlin and Czech Radio symphonies, Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, Connecticut Opera, Zagreb Quartet and many other international ensembles.

She headed the music composition program at the University of Minnesota, and for more than 10 years was editor-in-chief of the critically acclaimed book series “The Musical Woman: An International Perspective.”
