Lady Rams down Yuma Catholic on the road

The Shamrocks of Yuma Catholic had an opportunity to win on their final possession of the game in Yuma last night, but forward Zanae Facio missed a lay up with less then two seconds remaining in the game, giving the Lady Rams of Maricopa a 70-69 victory.

The outcome of the game had no effect on post season play since the Shamrocks of Yuma Catholic (20-7, 11-1 in the 2A West) had already locked up first place in the region and a number one seed in the 2007 state tournament.

The Lady Rams of Maricopa (22-6, 10-2 in the 2A West) were led by senior Yvonne “Yo” Nuguid, who took over in the fourth quarter and brought her team back, pouring in 16 points in the quarter and 22 on the night.

It was rough start for Nuguid, who was benched for the majority of the second and third quarters due to personal foul trouble.

With Nuguid on the bench in the third, Yuma Catholic took a 42-40 lead when Lady Shamrock freshman point guard Ashley Wirtzberger drained a deep three-pointer. The Lady Shamrocks outscored the Lady Rams 25 -14 in the third, giving the Lady Shamrocks a 51- 44 lead at the end of that quarter.

Lady Ram Nuguid took over in the fourth, knocking down four three-pointers and scoring 16 in the quarter.

Nuguid swished her third three, knotting the game at 57-57 with five minutes remaining. She gave the Lady Rams the lead for good when she knocked down her fourth three in the quarter, putting the Lady Rams ahead at 61-59. The Lady Rams went on to win a nail biter by a score of 70-69.

Yvonne “Yo” Nuguid led the Lady Rams with 22, followed by Jessica Schwanbeck with 21, Brittany Parks with 15, Kayla Valisto with 7 and Sara Scofield with 5.

Congratulations to the Lady Rams on avenging the loss to the Shamrocks here in Maricopa last month. This win gives the Lady Rams great momentum going into the 2007 state tournament.
