For the first time in 14 years, the boys of Maricopa 12U Little League have the chance to swing for the state title.

Last night, the team stepped up to the plate in its opening game against Sierra Vista.

In a double-elimination series, the 13-player roster could play as many as nine games in as many days.

Unfortunately, the team lost 2-1 but will face either Ahwatukee or Lake Havasu on Wednesday night.

The squad of 12-and-unders features Maricopa’s all-stars — some of the best players from around the district.

The boys, coaches and a handful of dedicated parents traveled to Flagstaff with hopes of witnessing history for the program.

It has been over a decade since the Little League squad has competed at the statewide level — longer than any of the players have been alive.

“We broke a long curse,” outfielder Kaleb Schrader said. “It feels amazing to be a part of this team.”

The team will face opponents from 14 other districts across Arizona.

“I’m excited to see the new competition,” team captain Felix Ambriz said. “A new field, new players, new everything.”

After a head-turning season, coach Jonathan Poole is on the edge of his seat watching his all-stars take to the diamond.

“We played through the good and the bad,” he said. “It just took the right players.”

Heading into the big games, Poole emphasized the significance of “baseball IQ,” knowing which play to make and how to think on your feet.

During the regular season, the team practiced Monday through Friday, dedicating long hours to their craft.

“You learn more when you’re tired,” Ambriz said. “It’s just the heat.”

If you want to support the Maricopa Little League, donate to their GoFundMe that will go toward lodging, transportation and food.
