Locals team up to clean up Maricopa

Maricopa City Clean Up only formed last week, but the group dedicated to keeping Maricopa clean has already gained nearly 230 members on their Facebook page.

The amount of litter and garbage around Maricopa began to bother Maricopa City Clean Up founder Daniel Seaney.  It’s not unusual to see Seaney picking up trash as he walks his dog around Copper Sky Regional Park. After talking with his like-minded friend Jeff Wasilenski, Seaney made the decision to try to clean up the city as a whole.

“We all like to complain about the mess, but nobody wants to go outside and do something about it,” Seaney said. “So we started a Facebook group to get people together.”

Seaney stated he had gone to a few businesses before starting the group to see if they would help clean up. The answer he typically received involved the companies not cleaning past their property line, so he took the matter to the people.

The support for the group was nearly instantaneous. In less than a week, the group rallied at Big O Tires to clean up the shopping center. Approximately 30 people, including Mayor Christian Price, joined in the effort.

Beyond the members who came out to Big O Tires, the group has received offers for donations. Seaney has turned down the majority of the offers since the group has not needed extra supplies, but a $100 donation from NuSense Pest Management provided the group with funding to take the collected garbage to the dump.
