Maricopa police placed a man behind bars after he allegedly robbed a child Saturday.

The Maricopa Police Department says the man they nabbed stole a child’s bike during a weekend ride. A probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa detailed the incident.

Just after 6:30 p.m., a child whose age was not released dialed 9-1-1 and told dispatchers a man stole his bicycle near North John Wayne Parkway and West Honeycutt Avenue.

The child told police that he was riding his bicycle when the man confronted him and caused him to fall off his bike. Officers saw a black scuff mark from the bike tire on the child’s leg.

The suspect, later identified as Dominique J. Davis, reportedly asked the child if he had a “tool.” The child responded that he did not, and the man allegedly, “Then this is mine,” and grabbed the bicycle.

Davis then allegedly rode the bike away and out of the child’s view.

About five minutes after the theft, officers found Davis riding a bike near Maricopa Elementary School. Both the bicycle and Davis matched descriptions the child gave.

Davis denied being the one who stole the bike but admitted it was stolen, according to the probable cause statement. Davis failed to open the combination lock and chain attached to the bicycle and could not provide any other proof of ownership.

Officers gave the child a ride home and stopped near the school, where he identified Davis as the man who stole his bike and confirmed the bike was his. The child also correctly provided officers with the combination to the bike lock.

The child’s father provided proof of purchase. He will press charges.

Davis was booked into Pinal County jail on a felony charge of robbery.
