A man survived his suicide attempt Sunday and now faces decades in prison, according to a Maricopa Police Department report.

MPD officers arrested him after they say he tried to run his girlfriend over but ended up wrecking a police car.

Just before 3 p.m., cops responded to a reported suicide attempt at Manderas Lane and Moreno Place in Santa Rosa Springs, according to the police report.

The caller told dispatchers her 29-year-old boyfriend cut his wrists open and drove away in a green truck.

Officers found the man “doing burnout style donuts” in a dirt lot, while his girlfriend was standing on the sidewalk nearby.

Police drove onto the lot and waited for the dirt to settle. The man “emerged from the dust storm” and sped into the road, according to police documents.

The man and his green truck began fishtailing on Manderas Lane, as he was “fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.”

Officers pursued the suspect south on Manderas Lane when he pulled a sudden U-turn and sped toward his girlfriend, who was still on the sidewalk.

MPD Officer Andrew Morrison collided with the man’s truck to disable it. The suspect jumped out of the truck and charged his girlfriend on foot before surrendering to police, according to the report.

During the crash, Morrison said he sustained minor injuries to his leg and ankle. MPD valued the damage to the police vehicle at about $10,000.

The suspect was booked into the Pinal County jail on felony counts of unlawful flight, aggravated assault on an officer and criminal damage over $10,000. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless driving and endangerment.

If convicted, his presumptive sentence would be at least 27 years in prison, although the maximum sentence is much higher.
