Maricopa All-Star Majors battle for district softball championship tonight

The state tournament hopes of Maricopa Little League hang in the balance tonight as the Maricopa All-Star Major Softball team takes on Casa Grande for the district championship.

The Maricopa team already has one loss in the district tournament so it will have to muster two wins, Monday and Tuesday nights, if the girls hope to move on.

“I have confidence that my girls can do it,” said the team’s coach, Eugenia Johnson. “We are every bit as good as Casa Grande.”

This is the sixth year Johnson has coached softball, and it is her second year as head coach of the All-Star team.

Last season her team was sent home early after losing two consecutive games in the district tournament.

“We have made lots of improvements this year, and the team has really seemed to gel,” Johnson said.

The Maricopa team is the last little league team from the area still in tournament play; each of the other teams was in a similar situation and lost their championship game.

The game will be played at the Coolidge Little League facility, and game time is at 7 p.m. tonight.
