‘Little Shop of Horrors’ opens Friday

Maricopa Community Theatre, in partnership with DSPA Gems, presents Little Shop of Horrors,” 7 p.m. Friday through Feb. 23 at the Performing Arts Center at Maricopa High School.

Little Shop of Horrors” by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman is a rock musical about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several show-stoppers like Skid Row (Downtown), Somewhere Thats Green and Suddenly,Seymour,” as well as the title song.

The show is directed by Carrie Vargas, choreographed by Ceylan Gentilella and Anthony Aquino, and musically directed by John Janzen and Denise Freitas. Local musicians Louvenia Samford, Eneyas Freitas, Denise Freitas, James Spears and John Janzen make up the Skid Row Band.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and may be purchased in advance through the cast or through brownpapertickets.com.

This production is recommended for ages 12 and older. This is a dark comedy and includes some profanity.
