Maricopa High volleyball hoping to net victory

The Maricopa High girls’ volleyball team continues to make strides as it searches for its first victory of the season.

In action over the last week, the Rams have fallen to Tucson Empire (25-17, 27-25, 25-21), Fountain Hills (25-9, 25-13, 25-7) and Safford (25-14, 25-12, 25-18).

“The girls have come a long way,” Maricopa High head coach Paul Olson said. “We have made improvements in each of our last three matches. Last night (Thursday) against Safford we played our best and most complete match of the season against an excellent Safford team. I felt like we had a legitimate chance at winning game three.”

Olson noted that Captain Madison Savoy is leading the Rams in kills for the season and has been among the top two or three each game in digs. Co-captain Katie Meyer is leading the team in aces as well as being among the leaders in blocks, while Logan Fancher is leading the team in assists. Carolyn Fayen and Liz Hernandez share the responsibilities of Libero and that position is leading the team in digs.

“There are others that are doing the little things that do not make the stat sheets, but are going to help us turn the season around,” Olson said.

While progress is showing, Olson and Co. are looking for some victories.

“It is hard to look at the record and not say that we have gotten off to a disappointing start,” Olson noted. “There have been positive moments along the way that have allowed us to build on. I truly believe the match we played last night against Safford is the kind of performance we can build on as we move into the rest of the season. I think if we maintain the attitude and the effort we showed last night we have the ability to play with anyone in our region.”

Maricopa returns to action at home on Sept. 25 vs. Eloy.
