Melvin: Let police, firefighters know you appreciate them

809

When asked to contribute a column concerning the 10 year anniversary of the unfortunate events of Sept. 11, 2001, I moved forward with mixed feelings.

I immediately asked the members of the department for input so the community would receive a collaborative public safety contribution concerning that event.

Everyone I talked to remembered “where they were” when the event occurred. I was a police lieutenant at my previous police department. Most Americans were in shock as was I. And, as most Americans, we were called to action. Several department members were quickly assembled along with local clergy members to travel to New York to assist.

As Maricopans, we have NOT forgotten. We continue to commemorate the occasion with the honor guards of the police and fire departments. Our mayor and city council, along with veterans, students and community members, participate in various events throughout the community. It is the perfect time to let your police and firefighters know that you appreciate them.

We have heard so many stories of heroism that occurred by our public safety officials on that day in the various cities throughout the United States. As your police chief, I am aware of heroic events that occur daily in our community by our local heroes.
