Library to show “Rango” movie on Friday

“Name’s …  Rango,” and he’ll be showin’ at the Maricopa Public Library Friday, July 22 from 2-4 p.m. Released earlier this year, the animated movie “Rango” features Johnny Depp in a quirky performance as the voice of a scrawny, imaginative and quick-tongued chameleon.

By accident — or maybe destiny — Rango finds himself out of his safe, domestic aquarium and in the Mojave Desert in a desert town called Dirt. Surrounded by rough and tough desert-dwelling creatures, Rango quickly figures out he has to lose the Hunter S. Thompson, gonzo  journalist garb and put on chaps and cowboy hat to adapt.

Using his illusions of grandeur and rapid fire wit to his advantage, Rango is quickly appointed as sheriff where there is a bit of a “water problem” and one big, bad rattlesnake to contend with.

The hit movie was directed by Gore Verbinski, the same director that linked up with Depp for “Pirates of the Caribbean.” With a PG rating, the movie also has some references and themes that will fly by most children’s radar but be picked up by adults.

Although off-beat, the movie will still register with issues that are relevant today, like “Control the water and you control everything.”

The movie is free, but sign up is required because of limited seating. The library is located at 41600 W. Smith-Enke Road.
