Observe Memorial Day with Maricopa veterans

989

On Monday this great country of ours will observe Memorial Day.

This date was designated a federal holiday to observe those who died while in military service and to honor fallen soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice – their lives!

At 6:30 a.m. Monday, May 30, the veterans of Maricopa will raise the flag at the Veteran’s Memorial at Rotary Park (located just off the Maricopa/Casa Grande Highway).

“I informed my son that we will be attending this flag raising, and the natural response of my 10 year old was ‘but it is soo early! ‘” said Julia Gusse, American Legion Post 133 commander and Maricopa councilwoman. “My response was ‘this day is to honor those who died so that we can have the freedoms that we hold dear. One day out of the year is well worth getting up early for this purpose.’”

Maricopa, please join local veterans to observe Memorial Day 2011.

“Let’s get up early, and thank goodness we are able to observe and enjoy another day in this great country – the land of the free and the home of the brave!” Gusse said.

The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion Auxiliary invite the public to join them for coffee and donuts at the Veteran’s Center after the flag-raising ceremony.

In addition, Maricopa American Legion Post 133 invites all those qualified to submit an application for the Legion scholarships. The application deadline has been extended to June 15.
