Maricopa wrestlers continue individual success

The Rams wrestling team made another good showing at its second meet Wednesday at Canyon State, winning 11 of its 13 matches.

“The team is doing a great job,” coach Jason Burr said.

Ty Mundt, JD Masterson and Hunter Field each won both of their matches, bringing their season record to a combined 15-0. Also competing were Frank Acuna (2-0), Dexter Purley (1-1), Austin Hullett (1-1) and Travis Moore (1-0).

Burr said the team is constantly learning and continues to strive to improve both as a team and individually. A current focus for the team is to have the first take down in each match.

Despite the strong individual performances, Maricopa (0-5) was still unable to notch its first victory. The team is wrestling short-handed and forced to forfeit several matches due to three wrestlers being academically ineligible. Burr hopes to have at least two of the wrestlers back competing as early as this week.

The Ram’s next meet is this Wednesday at Safford at 3 p.m.
