A rare sprinkling of rain didn’t stop a BMW from combusting into flames this morning.

Kevin Mallory responded to Butterfield Elementary School around 8 a.m. with his crew from the fire station on Alterra Parkway.

He said the black sedan was parked at the school when the engine block caught fire. The car was not occupied.

Maricopa firefighters made quick work of the parking lot blaze and extinguished it before it impacted school operations or injured anyone.

“Somebody drove up and they parked, and their car was on fire,” Mallory said. He couldn’t immediately confirm if the car belonged to a faculty member, staff member, parent or visitor.

Crews disconnected the car’s battery due to technical concerns.
