Middle school students recognized for academics and attendance

How do 980 Maricopa Wells Middle School students fit into the multi-purpose room at the high school? The answer is – “very carefully.”

A sea of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students attended their first quarter honors assembly on Thursday. Principal Stephanie Sharp was pleased to announce that they would, hopefully, be moving to their new school site on December 4. She described the science labs, new classrooms and athletic fields to a round of student applause; middle school will no longer be sharing facilities with the high school and elementary school after the move.

Maricopa Wells Middle School students packed the multi-purpose room for their awards assembly. They were elated to hear from Principal Stephanie Sharp (below) that they would be moving to their new site in early December.

Sharp also announced a new program call Panther Pride, which will reward students for keeping their campus clean. “You are my eyes and my ears,” she told the students. “You have a big responsibility to keep the new campus clean, but you’re not doing it here,” she explained, referring to graffiti and bathroom vandalism. “It’s not my campus; it’s your campus.”

Due to the large number of middle school students, those receiving honor roll, Principal’s List, perfect attendance and Student of the Month awards were asked to stand and be recognized. Honor roll students must have all A and B grades while the Principal’s List is composed of straight A students. To have perfect attendance students must have been enrolled from the first day of the quarter and never have missed one period of class work.

Introducing the many sixth graders, Sharp told the audience, “This just goes to show what wonderful sixth graders we inherited when almost half of them made honor roll.”
