More than 700 kids kick off soccer season

The fall season of youth soccer started Saturday with a record 718 players.

Ranging in age from four to 12, the players make up 66 teams, 34 in the 4-6 age group alone. The upper two divisions split the teams into boys and girls teams for the first time.

The increased number of players, over 100 more than the spring season, also meant an increase need in support. Along with four new referees for the upper divisions, volunteer coaches were also vital.

“This league couldn’t happen without the volunteers and parents,” said David Aviles, sports coordinator for the city’s Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department.

With overseeding of the grass at Pacana Park not yet complete, opening day games were rescheduled for various fields throughout the city. The 4-6 year-olds played at Santa Rosa Elementary School, the 7-9 year-olds at Maricopa Elementary School and the 10-12 age group at a community park in Glennwilde.

Once the overseeding is complete, all games will be played at Pacana Park on Saturdays. The league consists of seven games with a week off for Thanksgiving weekend.

“I’m looking forward to another successful season,” Aviles said.
