Four Maricopa Unified School District schools raised their grades this past school year, scoring better on the AIMS test. The district’s overall grade improved to a “B” compared to its 2011-2012 “C” grade.

Both middle schools – Maricopa Wells and Desert Wind – improved “D” grades in the 2011-2012 school year to “C” grades for the 2012-2013 year.

While Pima Butte maintained its “A” grade for the fourth year, Saddleback Elementary School and Maricopa High School raised “C” grades to “Bs.”

Only Maricopa Elementary School dropped a grade – from a “B” to “C.”

Butterfield and Santa Rosa elementary schools maintained “B” grades, while Santa Cruz elementary maintained its “C” grade.

“The goal of our district is that we will become an ‘A’ district and every school will continue to be an ‘A’ school, or will become an ‘A’ school,” Superintendent Steve Chestnut said. “I am very proud of our teachers and students for the excellent improvement on our AIMS test scores.”

Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal announced the release of Arizona’s 2012-2013 A-F letter grades for all state public schools and districts Thursday.

Letter grades for each school and district are based on Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards test. The test measures student proficiency of the Arizona Academic Content Standards in writing, reading, mathematics and science and is required by state and federal law.

Students in grades four through 10 are tested each year on the AIMS test. Passage of the 10th grade AIMS test is required for graduation.
