MUSD board to hear focuses for new charter schools

2014

MUSD governing board members will consider Wednesday whether to vote on the academic focus plan for each of the six charter schools for the 2014-2015 year – they range from becoming STEM to leadership to achievement oriented academies.

Butterfield, Santa Rosa, Maricopa and Saddleback elementary schools and Maricopa Wells Middle School are the new charter schools in the Maricopa Unified School District. As such, each school must choose an academic focus.

Staff, community members and students met in school focus committees during the past several months and have made recommendations to the governing board, which will make the final decision.

The board may consider and or vote on the recommendations Wednesday.

Butterfield Elementary School proposes focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and math to prepare for college and future careers, according to a district document.

Maricopa Elementary wants to develop a leadership academy integrating the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People program.

Santa Rosa Elementary would key in on critical thinking in a technology academy.

Santa Cruz would like to be an achievement academy, where the students and staff work together to set personal goals.

Saddleback Elementary proposes focusing on 21st Century Learning strategies.

Maricopa Wells Middle School proposes focusing on a science, technology, engineering, arts and math preparatory program, or on liberal/fine arts or a blended learning program emphasizing individual-based learning.

Also, the board is set to discuss and possibly vote on the budget proposal for Maricopa High School athletic field improvements, such as replacement of the artificial turf.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office Administration Building, 44150 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. For more information on these agenda items and others click here to get to the meeting of your choice, then click on “print agenda” and then go to “detailed agenda.”
