The Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board honored the Maricopa Rotary Club students of the month, acknowledged Pinal County Spelling Bee participant Ariana Vaida, and unanimously passed the benefit plan for the 2015-16 school year during their meeting on Wednesday.

The governing board also approved the human resources schedule. This included staff resignations, reclassifications, terminations, non-renewals, new position requests, stipends, leave of absence request and the contract renewal lists.

“I like that this [report] is coming so early this year,” MUSD Governing Board president Patti Coutre said. “It’s appreciated as a board to get these decisions done so we can replace those teachers who choose not to come back. That being said, I hope all of the teachers on this list come back.”

Members of the Maricopa Rotary Club honored their three February students of the month in front of the board. Rotary immediate past President JoAnn Ortega delivered a brief presentation for each student, acknowledging why they were chosen and what their achievements were for the month. Each student will be eligible for the Rotary scholarship program.

The governing board honored Ariana Vaida for her success in the 52nd annual Pinal County Spelling Bee. Vaida finished third in the event that featured nearly 60 students from around the county. She was presented with a certificate of achievement from Maricopa Unified School District superintendent Steve Chestnut and the governing board.

This is the second major award she has received since her team won the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II State Basketball Championship.

Members of the Maricopa Wells Middle School staff gave a presentation on the success of their remedial math and reading programs. They also showed their growth in enrollment throughout the year.
