Which candidate for MUSD School Board?

Quality education is an essential item in our community whether we are discussing the future of our children or economic development. Jim Collins in his book “Good to Great” confirmed that organizations only succeed to the level of their leadership. He went on to state that long-term, sustainable success comes from having leaders who are anchored in humility while passionate about the cause.

Maricopa Unified School District is in the middle of a turnaround I believe. The board has hired Dr. Steve Chestnut with more than 20 years experience as a superintendent to lead the district to days of significant achievement.

I have enjoyed frequent interaction with Dr. Chestnut and watched him relate to the public, the city council and business leaders and found that he is an exceptional leader. But he needs a strong board to provide guidance and support him.

What should we consider in selecting members for MUSD Governing Board:

 • Education: What level of education has the candidate achieved and does that inspire and serve as a model to others?
 • Experience: Does a candidate have the demonstrated experience to serve effectively on the governing board?
o If the candidate has prior community leadership experience, what were the meaningful results of their service?
o Do they have the reputation that reflects broad support – or, do they have a history of previous recalls (successful or not)?
o Were they selected for appointment in one of the three recent occasions when appointments have been made in the district?
 • Leadership Skills: Wanting to serve is not a guarantee the candidate actually has leadership competencies to enable them to serve.
o Managing change. How well has the candidate managed change in their own life and in organizations where they have served?
o Planning and organizing. Do they have the skills and education to plan and organize priorities of funding and create policies to impact the District?
o Interpersonal skills. Is the candidate’s presence inviting for others to feel free to engage in conversation or discussion of a challenging topic?
o Results orientation. Do they have a reputation of engaging with others to plan for success (i.e. participating in annual MUSD board strategic planning sessions)?
o Leadership. Are they motivating and empowering to and with others?
Give some thought before you check off a candidate’s box or decide to not participate in any selection.
