The Maricopa Unified School District governing board will have its first meeting of the new school year 6 p.m. tonight at the district administrative offices, 44150 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.

Board members will discuss and possibly approve updates to a number of current district polices ranging from student discipline, staff evaluations, emergency procedures, and salary deductions. The updated policies will be a first reading and can be changed before final approval.

Also, board members will talk about their legislative priorities to share with the Arizona School Board Association. Once all districts have submitted lists, the association will compile a Top 10 priorities list for the 2014 legislative session.

Applicants still are being sought to replace a board vacancy created with the resignation of Veronica Gay. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday. The successful candidate will be seated through Dec. 31, 2014.

Pinal County School Superintendent Jill M. Broussard will make the appointment.

Eligible Maricopa residents can apply online at www.PinalESA.org by clicking on the Elections tab, then on the Board Member Vacancies and then on Maricopa Unified Application for School Board Appointment.

The application can be completed online, but it must be printed out, signed, notarized and the original mailed or hand delivered by the deadline. The superintendent’s office is at 75 N. Bailey, Florence.
