Beginning this spring, cross country runners at Central Arizona College can apply for the George Young Memorial Scholarship, a $500 award for full-time students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

George Young, a four-time Olympian and former athletic director at CAC passed away Nov. 8 at the age of 86.

Young competed in the 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase during the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

After retiring from competition, Young began his coaching and teaching career at Central Arizona College in 1971 as an instructor and the Cross Country/Track and Field coach.

Two years later, he was promoted to athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1996.

In 1988, while serving as the athletic director, Young guided the CAC Cross Country team to victory in the Junior College National Championship.

Young’s wife Nancy made a generous contribution in his memory to the CAC Foundation to establish the George Young Memorial Scholarship.
