Newly refurbished Rotary pool open through Labor Day

Prior to 1958, kids in Maricopa swam in irrigation ditches.

However, that practice turned out to be dangerous, and several drownings occurred in the area.

Long-time resident John Smith donated the land for the Rotary pool, on the site where it still exists today. Local farmers donated bales of cotton (at about $500 each) to cover the cost of the cement for the pool, and the Maricopa Rotary Club’s Stagecoach Days celebration helped raise additional funds for the pool’s construction.

Today Rotary pool continues to serve Maricopa. Now open for summertime use, it has been refurbished and repainted, providing a great place to swim and play with friends, as well as to meet new people while cooling off during the Arizona summer heat.

The pool, which is located on the Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway adjacent to the MUSD District Office Administration Building, will remain open to Maricopa residents through Labor Day weekend.

Pool hours are as follows:

Community swim times:  daily from noon until 4:30 p.m.
Senior swim times:  Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Mondays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.
