Nighttime work on West Smith-Enke Road is underway a few days earlier than expected.

Construction crews with Tolleson-based Cactus Asphalt started crack-and-seal and mill-and-fill work on both directions of Smith-Enke Road Wednesday night. Crews will work between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The project was first slated to start Jan. 8, but after a weather-related delay, the city earlier this month said the project would start Jan. 29 and last until Feb. 26.

Amid a warm front, work started five days ahead of its new schedule.

Utility manhole and valve adjustments will be completed Feb. 7, but more work is scheduled in March and April, according to Public Works Engineering Project Manager Tammy Valadez Paz.

“The roadway will always be open for traffic,” Paz said. “Only one lane is closed at a time during the scheduled work hours.”
