Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith was at the Pinal Gila Community Child Services Head Start program in Maricopa Wednesday morning to read to preschool children and to proclaim October as Head Start month.

Head Start is a federally funded program in existence since 1965. The program serving Maricopa has been around since 1979.

The program serves children up to age 5 from low income families as well as children with disabilities.

“It is a great program that gets students ready for school,” Smith said.

The program serves 40 children divided into two 20-student blocks, one attending in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Besides Mayor Smith, several city staffers and MUSD superintendent John Flores were present for the proclamation.
