Ministry: ‘We’ve got you covered’

When it comes to offering comfort and solace, this group of Maricopa women knits, crochets and quilts for others.

They are the members of “We’ve Got You Covered,” the Prayer Shawl Ministry of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

It began in February 2010, when parishioner Melanie Warthman wanted to extend a Lenten journey of knitting and crocheting for others and suggested including such handiwork as a permanent part of the women’s ministry in the parish community.

Sixteen women responded to the call, and in the spirit of fellowship and friendship, they meet on the second and fourth Saturday of each month to create shawls, lap robes and small blankets.

Mercedes Metzger, the group’s youngest member, said, “It’s provided me with a closer bond to the parish.”

The group has made and shipped more than 200 items and prayer shawls to servicemen and women in the Middle East, and to people in the Philippines, Panama, Canada and numerous cities throughout the United States.

Volunteer Sharon Buda said, “People are astounded that someone would make something for them while they’re ill.”

Shawls not only are given to the sick, but to anyone who may have experienced the death of someone close to them, or may be dealing with such issues as chronic illness or emotional upheaval.

When one receives a shawl, the goal is two-fold: provide the physical comfort of holding something soft, and the spiritual knowledge prayers are being offered for that person.
