Override supporters take to the streets

Supporters of the Maricopa Unified School District override proposal took to the streets Saturday. More than a dozen volunteers spent much of their Saturday morning greeting motorists on John Wayne Parkway near Smith-Enke Road with smiles and pro-override signs.

“We had a good turnout, and the support shown was great,” organizer Merry Grace said. “We had lots of honks, waves and thumbs up.

“As a parent I see the support growing for our schools, and it is wonderful. It is time our community acknowledges the good that is happening and unite to ensure that good continues along with strides towards more progress. We all need to work together to be a part of the solutions. These are our schools.”

Community members, teachers, administrators and students were among the volunteers.

“We got a lot of thumbs up,” said Henry Wade, who estimated there were eight times the motorists showing support than those opposed.

Wade said spending a few hours of his Saturday supporting the cause was “a no-brainer:” “I support it. They had an event they wanted to do with the signs out on John Wayne Parkway, so I was in.”
