The illegal use of fireworks is being blamed for the death of a duck this New Year’s weekend at Pacana Park.

The City of Maricopa public information officer reported that between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning, a number of fireworks were set off near the park's ramada.

A duck living at the park’s lake was found with powder burns on its body, according to a city press release, “suggesting a direct contact with fireworks.”

***ADVERTISEMENT***Fireworks also apparently scared a large number of ducks that live at the lake. Normally 60 ducks are in the area this time of year, but only 20 were counted there on Tuesday.

The city is asking anyone with knowledge of the incident, or anyone witnessing the use of fireworks within city limits, to call 520-866-5111.
