Brittany Parks’ 13 points and 15 rebounds led the Maricopa High girls basketball team to a 46-33 victory over South Pointe Dec. 13. Lindsey Valles scored 11 points and Marissa Lubag had six in the team’s first win of the season.

“This game was really about teamwork,” Coach Jenn Miller said.

Miller said everyone got involved in the offense and moved the ball well. Although they are still trying to figure out their roles on the team, she said the game was a step in the right direction.

Win streak snapped at 1 with loss to Fountain Hills
Despite 22 points from Brittany Parks, the Rams win streak ended at one with a 58-42 to Fountain Hills Tuesday.

“The game was frustrating for all of us,” Miller said.

Maricopa played a close game with the Falcons for three quarters and led by four at the half. But, according to Miller, Fountain Hills got hot in the fourth quarter and pulled away. She said lazy defense and a lack of care when handling the ball also contributed to the Rams’ demise.

“We dug ourselves a hole that we couldn’t get out of,” Miller said.

Miller said one positive piece of the game was finding out that the girls can compete with some of the teams at the 3A level. The new goal isn’t just to keep up with teams within Maricopa’s division, but to beat them. She plans to work with the team to eliminate turnovers and finish easy baskets in hopes of turning the team’s season around.

Rams wallop Empire for second win
Maricopa traveled to Tucson Friday where it beat host Empire High School 50-22. It was the most points the Rams scored all season and raised its record to 2-8.

The girls play again Dec. 27 and 28 when they host the Copa Hoops Tournament.
