Despite a solid performance from sophomore Brittany Parks, who had a team-high 16 points, the Maricopa Rams girls basketball team lost to the Wickenburg Wranglers Tuesday 49-26.

The game started off close, with the Rams (0-1) and Wranglers (2-0) trading baskets throughout the first quarter, which ended with Wickenburg leading 13-10. Wickenburg pulled away from the Rams in the second quarter and led by eight at the half.

With just one minute left in the third quarter, Parks converted a three-point play for the Rams only points of the quarter.

Parks tried to spark a rally in the fourth quarter with back-to-back steals that resulted in layups. But the team was unable to continue the drive, or stop Wickenburg, allowing the Wranglers to score 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Parks’ teammates Gloria Compain, Amanda Hamm, Karla Torres, Elyshia Amstead and Brinkel Motley all added two points each.

“Unfortunately, we did not get to play in any scrimmages, so this was our first opportunity to see what we do well and what we need to work on,” coach Jenn Miller said, noting that the team will be working on its rebounding and their press break.

The Rams first conference game is Saturday against Safford.
