The Maricopa Police Department confirmed the body found in a submerged vehicle earlier this week as 67-year-old Sandra Karelsen.
On Wednesday afternoon, police spotted a blue Hyundai in a small lake located on Rummy Road and Pinochle Lane in the Province community. The Pinal County Medical Examiner positively identified the body found in the vehicle as Karelsen’s.
According to the medical examiner, Karelsen drowned and did not appear to have evidence of trauma. Police are still investigating what led to the crash.
Police reported her missing earlier that day after a friend of Karelsen said she was last seen Feb. 13.
