Rams kick off spring football

The Maricopa High School football program kicked off its two-week spring conditioning stint this past Monday afternoon, the first spring session under head coach Tyler Brandt.

Coach Brandt, who is excited about the upcoming football season, wants to be prepared as Maricopa makes the jump from 2A West to 3A South.

At the end of the 2006 season’s awards banquet Coach Brandt emphasized discipline and dedication during the off-season to the returning players, including hitting the weight room. A majority of the starters will be returning to the team, and quarterbacking duties will be turned over to senior-to-be Will Clemans.

Clemans will have plenty of weapons to choose from, such as speedy running back/wide out Justin Zabawa, wide receiver Cody Seymore, running back Matt Fierros, full back/wide out Blake Schwanbeck and tight end Jacob Cruz.

The two-week spring session allows the players an opportunity to work on basic fundamentals, speed, agility and conditioning. It also gives Brandt and his staff an opportunity to evaluate returning and incoming players.

This summer the Rams will participate in several seven-on-seven passing leagues throughout the Phoenix area.
