R&B singer plans Maricopa debut for CD

R&B sensation and Maricopa resident Joseph ‘Seph” Ewing hopes to put Pinal County on the map and inspire a generation with the release of his first solo CD Jan. 16.

“So much of the music out there today is negative,” Seph said. “I want to bring back good music.”

The 17-year-old’s musical influences include Marvin Gaye, Tammy Turner, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cook and James Brown.

However, the person most responsible for the Seph’s venture into the music business is his father James Ewing.

The elder Ewing, who has been a minister for 35-plus years, had hopes of making it big in the music business himself at one time, but now devotes his efforts to helping his son achieve success.

“Around two or three years old you could just see he was talented,” Ewing said. “”By seven years of age he had already began to write music and play the piano.”

Ewing said his son had a genuine interest and desire to become involved in music. “It was not me pushing my dream off onto him, it was truly something he wanted to do.”

In addition to the musical insight Seph gained from his father, he also picked up tidbits of knowledge from his eight brothers and sisters, all of whom were involved in music in one way or another.

“Being a minister, all of the kids would take part in the choir,” Ewing said. “It was a family affair.”

Three years ago, Seph teamed with his oldest brother and sister to release a faith-based CD. “It did pretty well, but Seph decided it was time to go solo,” Ewing said.

Seph describes his solo project as contemporary R and B containing positive messages, but he is hesitant to call it a strictly Christian CD.

“In the book of Esther the name of God is never mentioned, but you can still feel His presence,” Seph said. “That is what I want to convey in my music.”

Local DJ Daniel Agloro, better known as DJ Fresco, said Seph’s talent level is unbelievable.

“Most artists enhance their voices electronically,” Agloro said. “Not Seph. He is so impressive. I can see him being one of the guys who lead the way musically for Pinal County.”

The CD will debut with a live performance by Seph at the Mariscos Pulpo Loco Mexican Restaurant at 8 p.m. on Jan. 22. The restaurant is located at 44630 West Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.

“This is not about my success, but reaching the next generation with music,” Seph said. “I hope to bring a positive message to the youth through my music.” “
