Don’t shove your Nikes under the bed just because it’s the off season.

Students who have a passion for basketball now have the chance to get off the couch and enhance their skills this summer.

Summer basketball camps for boys and girls will be held during the month of June at Central Arizona College’s Signal Peak Campus. They will be held in the George Young Activity Center.

This is the first basketball camp CAC has hosted, and the idea was brought up by Jordan Dreiling, the assistant coach for CAC’s men’s basketball team. Dreiling has participated in basketball camps for the past seven years and will be in charge of the CAC camps this year.

The Elementary Basketball Camp for students in 2nd through 6th grade will be held June 6-9. The Junior High Basketball Camp for students in 5th through 9th grade will take place June 13-16. Coaches will teach and build upon basic fundamentals through repetition, drills and league competitions. The cost for each of these camps is $105.

An Offensive Skills Camp will be held June 20-23for students in 7th through 12th grade. This camp will focus on players’ shooting technique and scoring moves. It will include intense work on jump shots, form shooting, and shooting off the pass and dribble, as well as scoring moves in the post. The cost for this camp is $95.

All three camps will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Dreiling said no prior experience is required of the campers. “We will go from the beginning all the way up. We will work on ball handing, progressive shooting and focus on all the fundamentals.”

Parents are welcome to stay and watch, and there also will be early drop-off available.

The deadline for camp registration has been extended to June 1, but late registration is available until the morning of camp for an additional $15.

Dreiling said several coaches from CAC, including Denise Cardenas, the head women’s coach, along with both college and high school players will make up the staff of the camps. There also will be an athletic trainer on site for safety purposes.

Along with four full days of basketball fundamentals, team building activities and league basketball games taught by elite college coaches and players, each camper will receive lunch, a swim pass and a camp T-shirt.

Players can look forward to competition for camp awards that will be presented the last day of each camp session. All camps are co-ed, but boys and girls will compete separately in league play and for awards.
