Maricopa Library and Cultural Center’s summer reading program fosters literacy for children and adults alike during the summer months.

Readers can earn badges, points, prizes and attend an array of events at the library – including henna body art, super-hero reading, magic and story times.

On June 24, the public is welcome to attend the free Jungle Jill Reptile show at 10:30 a.m. The free, one-hour event brings birds, reptiles, insects and invertebrates to the audience’s lap.

Registration is encouraged.

Although the summer reading program has been around for nearly a decade, library manager Angela Howell said she chose a handful of new activities and performers.

The program is open to all ages, “offering a little bit of everything,” Howell said.

“We didn’t want to just cater to the really young kids. We wanted to add some education and cultural stuff,” she added.

Events such as the Taiko drumming on July 13 and the Polynesian dance on July 22 expose participants to different cultures before going back to school.

“It continues the education process year-round,” library manager Angela Howell said. “It gets them excited about learning.”
