Saddleback students dunk the mayor

Parent Merry Grace got her wish Friday. A Maricopa mayor got dunked.

Grace, a school activist with sons at Saddleback Elementary, Maricopa Wells Middle and Maricopa High schools wrote an op-ed piece Oct. 17 titled “Parent: Break down walls between city and schools.”

In her piece she asked “When was the last time the mayor of our town (any mayor) sat in a dunking booth at a school festival?”

On Friday, Mayor Christian Price did just that.

Price got dunked and slid down water slides during Saddleback’s traditional end-of-year Water Day celebration.

The school had a 40-foot slide, two 24-foot slides, a dunk tank and snow cones.

“It is awesome to see the walls crumbling down and the growing partnerships forming between our city, Ak-Chin and the schools,” Grace said, pointing out Councilman Leon Potter also was on hand Friday.

“I overheard some kids bragging to each other that they 'dunked the mayor,'” Grace said.
