Maricopa’s American Legion post is offering a scholarship to young adults interested in attending a mini police academy this summer.

The American Legion Law Enforcement Academy is a week-long summer program that provides youth with a first look at the role of police officers. The academy hosts classes on civics, safety and criminal justice, as well as physical training. It is open to ages 11 to 19.

“It’s really for the person who’s thinking about a career in law enforcement,” said Jonell Sullivan, an Air Force veteran and board member of Maricopa’s American Legion. “They’re going to see what the training’s like, what the day-to-day operation is like.”

The academy is June 10-17 at a youth camp in Prescott. The fee is $300, however,

the scholarship would cover that cost.

ALLECA began in 1981 hosted by the American Legion Department of Arizona and Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Details: Applications are due May 10 and can be found on the ALLECA AZ website. For more information, contact the Maricopa American Legion post at 520-233-2400, Ext. 2.
