Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board re-elected Robert Downey as president and Patti Coutré as vice president last night.

Downey voiced hesitancy to serve a third year-long term as president because he believed it was a tradition to limit that role to two years.

His board colleagues, however, expressed their support for him being elected to a third term and their decision was unanimous.

Board member Torri Anderson, who is leaving her board position open to retire at year’s end, nominated Downey.

Coutré, who recently accepted a three-week temporary term late last year to meet board policy, was unanimously re-elected as vice president.

The vice president position was vacated in October with the resignation of former board vice president Gary Miller.
