School board to vote on warehouse for Lakes site

The Maricopa Unified School District’s governing board is scheduled to make a decision on a site in the Lakes at Rancho El Dorado community as the future home of a maintenance facility and warehouse during its meeting Wednesday.

The 12-acre parcel of land, located just south of the Global Water Center at 22590 N. Powers Parkway, has been the discussion of much debate in recent years. School officials have considered building both a transportation facility and a school on the land, but community outcry and safety concerns thwarted both measures.

“We are just trying to figure out something to do with the land,” said district spokesman Tom Beckett.

The 11 warehouse and maintenance staff members are currently headquartered at the old district office located off Honeycutt Avenue. That facility will need to be leveled when the school board decides to sell a final phase of a bond passed several years ago for the construction of an auditorium.

The board will possible approve a legislative delegate for the district and a working agreement with the superintendent.
