Starting teachers at Maricopa Unified School District will make more money in the coming school year: $54,000.

MUSD governing board members voted 4-0 to approve a new employee compensation plan Wednesday night. Board president Robert Downey was absent.

“The decision to increase the starting salary for teachers to $54,000 per year reflects the governing board’s commitment to attracting and retaining top talent in MUSD,” said Supt. Tracey Lopeman.

It’s a $1,500 boost over last school year.

The district employs 469 teachers and has a low turnover rate compared to school districts statewide, which recently reported teacher vacancy rates of up to 30%.

The district reported only about 10 vacancies in December, a rate of just more than 2%.

Lopeman said the increase approved Wednesday was determined based on considerations, including market analysis, budget considerations and the goal of offering a competitive compensation package to prospective teachers.

The board also approved a 5% raise for all classified, certified and administrative employees. Classified staff members earning less than $25 per hour will also receive the 5% raise, along with an additional 30 cents per hour adjustment.

Said Lopeman: “We believe that offering competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits is a key component in creating an environment where educators and staff feel valued, supported and motivated to excel in their roles.”
