Ten days after he went missing, a search party of family and friends located the body of 84-year-old Max Schrader around 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

He was found in a desert area of Mobile miles away from his car where there are no paved roads. Because of the remoteness, it took MCSO deputies “several hours” to reach the location and “navigate through tough terrain and/or areas with no roads at all.”

Officers believe Schrader was traveling a “backwoods roadway” from Mobile to Rainbow Valley when his vehicle broke down or got stuck. He then apparently tried to walk back to is home in Mobile with no food or water. Family realized he was missing April 3. MCSO was notified April 6, and a Silver Alert was issued across the state.

Deputies reportedly joined the search being conducted by Schrader’s family, friends and volunteers. His car was found April 9.

It appeared Max was traveling a backwoods roadway to enter Rainbow Valley from Mobil and his vehicle broke down or got stuck on a dirt road. He then attempted to travel on foot back to his home with no food or water and likely perished from the elements.

According to MCSO, there do not appear to be any signs of suspicious circumstances or foul play. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Schrader was described as deaf but had no other medical conditions.

Max Schrader, 84, has been missing in the desert since April 3, and volunteers are still searching for him north of Mobile.

On April 9, Schrader’s car was located on a Powerline Road headed from Mobile toward Rainbow Valley. The car was located approximately 15 miles from his home in Mobile.

The vehicle was stuck, so family believes Schrader left on foot. No one is sure which direction he may have traveled.

Air support and K9s were called into the area, but no signs of Schrader have been found.

He is said to be well acclimated to the desert and did have some water with him. He is also described as deaf.

Schrader is white, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office put out a Silver Alert on Monday. Anyone who has information about the case may contact B_Bell@mcso.maricopa.gov.

About 60 volunteers searched the area on Wednesday but were unable to locate Schrader. A couple areas where an old fire may have been was located and perhaps a place when he may have been lying down in a wash, according to family members.

Thursday morning, 10 to 15 volunteers and dogs again searched the area, four miles north of the Waste Management site. Volunteers are searching in a grid pattern. If you would like to assist in the search, contact Pam at 480-250-2206 or Violet at 480-336-0575.

They are especially hunting for volunteers who can bring a quad, side-by-side, dirt bike or horses. Volunteers are urged to bring water, wear sunscreen, have your phone charged and dress for brushy desert terrain.

A Maricopa teenager has gone missing and is feared to be a runaway.

Shawna Dygowski’s daughter Katanyna (known as Kat), 16, was last seen at home around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

“When I woke up Monday morning and went to let her dog in her room, I saw she wasn’t there and her window was unlocked,” Dygowski said.

Maricopa Police Department spokesman Ricardo Alvarado said Kat apparently left notes, and officers are following up with her friends. However, the notes did not indicate where she might be going.

“We don’t have information that she was with anyone,” Alvarado said.

“The police are doing great but everything is a dead end,” Dygowski said. “She has no phone so no way to track her. No bank [account] so no access to money.”

Katanyna Pauline Dygowski is described as 5-foot-6, 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She has braces and a nose piercing.
