The 2008 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Tour de Cure bicycling fundraiser had a local team, Team Province, participating among the 500 riders on March 15.
Team Province, riders from Province Bike Club and their friends from Maricopa’s own Province active adult community, completed the 35-mile route and raised over $3,400 in donations from family, friends and business associates.
The annual Tour de Cure is one of the top fundraising events in the Phoenix and Tucson areas for the ADA. On March 15 in Phoenix riders completed tours of 10, 35 and 62.5 miles, raising over $240,000 for the research and education programs of the ADA.
The Province bicycle club was founded in 2005 and hosts rides twice a month with enough riders to form three, and often four, groups going out. “We have groups for all skill level riders,” says current club president Brian Gotcher.
There is an abundance of enthusiasm for cycling within the Province community, and there have been two separate Tour de Province events held in 2006 and 2007. With all the club’s riding interest, it is easy to find riders willing to ride the Tour de Cure this year. The group hopes to have 10 cyclists representing the community at the ADA Tour de Cure and to find a sponsor for some team jerseys as well.
The March ride was a first time effort for Team Province. Team captain Ed Joyal said, “Team Province enjoyed this event so much and had such great financial support from everyone that we will be riding again in 2009. This year Team Province will ride under the leadership of our top team fundraiser in 2008, Keith Monk, and the team will be participating in both the 35 and 62.5 mile routes on March 14.”
Goals for the 2009 event for Team Province include having additional riders from the Maricopa area participating and raising over $5,000 in donations for the ADA.
