Maricopa Professional Firefighters (Local 4561) were out in full force Tuesday afternoon to scoop ice cream for customers at Water and Ice in the Bashas’ Plaza.

The “Beat the Heat Ice Cream Social” from 2 – 7 p.m. was a benefit for the Firefighters Relief Fund. It was organized by members of Local 4561 and Capt. Richard Jackson, their president.

Water and Ice donated all profits from the event to the relief fund, which has already aided ailing, injured or deceased firefighters and their families in Maricopa and across Arizona, as well as in other states across the nation.

There were plenty of firefighters on hand to serve customers, especially the wide-eyed children. One of the fire district’s new pumper trucks was in the parking lot, drawing attention to the benefit event.
