Welcome to the Jungle: Maricopa’s newest business

It may have been pure coincidence, but the owner of Maricopa’s newest business is hoping the store’s St. Patrick’s Day opening will bring good luck. Yogurt Jungle is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop opening in a second location in the Fry’s shopping center on John Wayne Parkway.

After the success of her first store in Queen Creek, owner Sharilynn Hewitt said it was easy to choose Maricopa for her newest venture. Hewitt’s husband and partner, Alex Casillas, works occasionally in Maricopa and told her about the town’s growth and potential.

“Storefront businesses are very important,” said Maricopa Chamber of Commerce Chairman Bob Gillespie, “It’s always important to the community when we have a new business come in that has the visibility this type of operation brings. It shows the stability of the community.”

It will also be a new opportunity for schools in the city. Hewitt said as a former school employee she has seen the need for creative fundraising and student encouragement. She plans to donate gift certificates as student rewards and host fundraising nights where 20 percent of the proceeds will go to the school.

The store currently has 12 part- and full-time employees. It offers 12 flavors of mostly non-fat and low-calorie frozen yogurt. After filling your own cup, you can choose from over 50 toppings and pay by the weight of your creation. Yogurt Jungle is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Mother of four Genevieve Garcia said her kids were so excited about the new treats in town they tried to be first in line on opening day. Garcia’s kids all smiled when she said she expects to be taking a stroll over to the store quite often this summer.
