Disc golf at Maricopa Meadows.

The Maricopa Meadows Disc Golf Club will host the third annual Maricopa Meadows Open at Maricopa Meadows Park on Jan. 16-17.

The Open is the first Professional Disc Golf Association tournament of the year and is expected to see 144 professional and amateur disc golfers get ready for the upcoming season.

“Three years ago, we got together and decided we needed to make an annual tournament,” Tournament Sponsorship Director Paul Brenner said. “We were lucky to get in contact with Dave Feldberg and made it happen.”

Feldberg is a PDGA champion and fifth-ranked player in the world. He became involved with the project when his longtime friend and experienced professional Javier Kowalski reached out regarding the tournament.

The Open began in 2014 as a one-day event with nearly 100 participants. Last year saw nearly the same result. The 2016 tournament will be the first to feature 54 holes over two days.

“This is our first two-day tournament,” Brenner said. “It’ll be bigger and have more people. We will have bigger payouts as well, and for the first time we will have live coverage of the tournament through the PDGA and Matchboxx TV.”disc-golf-discs

Amateurs and professionals are welcome to enter the tournament. The field maximum is 144 players, and entry prices differ depending on club affiliation and experience.

The tournament will also serve as a food drive for Against Abuse Maricopa. Tournament organizers ask participants and spectators to bring in canned goods to help local victims of abuse.

“The disc golf community is worldwide,” Brenner said. “We don’t have a large number of supporters in Maricopa yet, but we expect 135 people from around the globe to come participate.”
