The City of Maricopa’s Meals on Wheels program will get a big boost next Thursday, November 11th. According to public relations director Glenn Swain, that morning at 10 a.m. Harrah’s executives and employees will present a 2004, $48,000 delivery van to the Meals on Wheels program for delivery of meals to the needy and the homebound. Mayor Kelly Anderson and Maricopa’s City Council members are expected to attend the presentation as well as various dignitaries from the state. NASCAR driver Robbie Gordon will be delivering some meals from his racecar. The public is invited. A reception will follow at Agave’s at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino.

Susan Baker, representing Harrah’s, told the City Council Wednesday evening, “We hope to expand our services here to our community, and we hope to do a lot of things for the community as we grow.”

Recently, Harrah’s Employees Reaching Out (H.E.R.O.s) donated $20,000 to launch the first Meals on Wheels program for the City of Maricopa. The program currently provides two meals a day, five days a week, to approximately eight individuals according to Jessica Galvan, the Meals on Wheels Volunteer Coordinator. “We are bringing the meals from the Casa Grande Senior Center now, but we are looking for facilities we could utilize and have talked to Bashas’.” Ms. Galvan added that as the number of meal recipients increases, the demand for volunteers to deliver these meals will also grow. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Ms. Galvan at (520) 836-2758 or 1-800-293-9393.

Mayor Kelly Anderson issued the following proclamation, declaring November as Meals on Wheels Month in Maricopa.
