Students and their families packed the Maricopa Unified School District’s Administration Building Wednesday night for monthly presentations and accolades during a Governing Board meeting.

Grace Huffaker, a Desert Wind Middle School eighth grader, received the December Rotary Student of the Month recognition Jan. 24 after being nominated by her teacher Lara Johnson.

Maricopa Rotarian Aron Rausch presented Huffaker with the certificate for her punctuality, politeness and respectful attitude toward her teachers and peers. Another teacher, Lisha Vila, told Rotary that Huffaker is a helpful student and high achiever.

“Academically, she strives to always do her best and puts forth effort into all of her work,” Vila said in a written statement from Rotary.

Maricopa High School Senior Ada Carr was also named Rotary Student of the Month. Carr was described as an “outstanding” honors student who is enrolled in Advanced Placement courses. She was nominated by MHS Career and College Counselor Bernadette Russoniello.

Carr is also a Varsity Ram, competing in cross country, basketball and soccer. She is a church volunteer and involved in various school organizations, including: DECA, National Honors Society, Link Crew and MHS Site Council.

Later that evening, a group of Butterfield Elementary Students took the microphone for individual presentations on their opinions of the district’s newly adopted math curriculum.
