Police detained and referred criminal charges against three children after a fight at the Copper Sky skate park Friday night.

Officers responded to the skate park around 9:30 p.m. after a reported fight involving a “large group of juveniles,” according to a Maricopa Police Department statement that night.

Officers handcuffed three from the group before releasing them to their parents and referring charges to Pinal County Juvenile Courts.

Citing an ongoing investigation, the department declined to comment on what provoked the fight, the nature of the charges referred, the number of people involved or their ages.

Copper Sky was told to shelter in place for a brief time during the incident, which happened during the pop-up Spring Carnival.

“MPD is committed to the safety of our community and believes this incident was an isolated incident,” spokesperson Monica Williams said.

After the fight, MPD upped the police presence around Copper Sky, according to Williams, who said there were no further incidents.

Police presence will also be heightened this weekend “out of an abundance of caution.”
